How to Start a Pollinator-Friendly Garden

Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds play a crucial role in plant reproduction and food production. Without them, many of the fruits, vegetables, and flowers we love simply wouldn’t exist. The good news? With a few thoughtful plant choices and garden habits, you can turn your yard, patio, or even a few containers into a buzzing, blooming haven.

Let’s dig in.

Why Pollinators Love Home Gardens

Pollinators are drawn to gardens that offer two key things: food and shelter. Nectar and pollen provide essential nutrition, while diverse plant heights, bloom times, and structures give pollinators places to rest and hide from predators.

Native and pollinator-friendly gardens also help offset habitat loss caused by development and large-scale agriculture. Even small gardens matter especially when many gardeners are planting with pollinators in mind.

The Best Plants to Attract Bees

Bees are all about efficiency. They prefer plants that offer easy access to nectar and pollen, and they love seeing lots of the same plant grouped together.

Top bee-friendly plants to look for at Jolly Lane:

  • Coneflower (Echinacea) – A pollinator superstar with bold, cheerful blooms that last all summer.
  • Black-Eyed Susan – Bright, sunny flowers that bees can’t resist.
  • Salvia – Tubular flowers packed with nectar and available in a range of colors.
  • Lavender – Beautiful, fragrant, and constantly buzzing once in bloom.
  • Bee Balm (Monarda) – The name says it all! Bees flock to it, and butterflies love it too.

Pro tip: Plant in clusters rather than single plants. A group of coneflowers is easier for bees to spot than one lone bloom.

Butterfly Favorites: Host Plants Matter

Butterflies aren’t just shopping for nectar; they’re also looking for places to lay their eggs. That means host plants are just as important as nectar plants.

Butterfly-attracting favorites include:

  • Milkweed – Essential for monarch butterflies. It’s their only host plant!
  • Zinnias – Easy to grow, colorful, and perfect for beginner gardeners.
  • Dill & Parsley – Not just for the kitchen - swallowtail caterpillars love them.
  • Phlox – Fragrant blooms that attract a variety of butterflies.
  • Blanket Flower (Gaillardia) – Bright, daisy-like flowers with a long bloom time.

Don’t panic if caterpillars munch on your plants, that’s a good sign! It means your garden is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Design Tips for a Pollinator Paradise

You don’t need a full meadow to support pollinators. A few simple design choices can go a long way:

  • Plan for nonstop blooms by choosing plants that flower in spring, summer, and fall.
  • Mix heights and textures groundcovers, mid-height blooms, and taller plants create diversity.
  • Go easy on mulch near flowering plants so ground-nesting bees can access soil.
  • Skip pesticides and herbicides whenever possible. Even “pollinator-safe” sprays can cause harm.

Adding a shallow dish of water with stones for landing can also help pollinators stay hydrated during hot summer days.

Containers Count Too!

No yard? No problem. Container gardens can be just as pollinator friendly.

Try combining:

  • A thriller (tall salvia or lavender)
  • A filler (zinnia or calibrachoa)
  • A spiller (trailing lantana or verbena)

Place containers in sunny, visible areas. Pollinators will find them faster than you think.

Small Changes, Big Impact

You don’t have to overhaul your entire landscape. Start with a few plants this season and build from there. Each flower you plant helps support pollinators and adds beauty to your space.

And if you ever feel overwhelmed, that’s what we’re here for. The Jolly Lane team is always happy to help you choose the right plants for your garden style, sunlight, and goals!
