The Great Plains of America exhibits a diverse selection of perennials, shrubs, and evergreens. In recent years, the greenhouse industry has seen a strong interest in native plant material and consumers are aware of the virtues of using plant material acclimated to local climate.

The Great Plants program from the Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association was established in 1997 to promote plants of the Plains that are both exciting and underused in the home landscape. The Denver Botanical Gardens and Panayoti Kelaidis have designed the Plant Select program to promote outstanding plants that work well in the Western South Dakota area.
